LOWELL --
TOWN -- The Community Preservation Committee voted to deem several city park projects eligible for funding, including a $350,000 request from the Department of Planning and Development to improve basketball courts at Eagle Park on Dewitt Street, Hadley Park on Middlesex Street and Dushon Park on Woburn Avenue. The committee also carried forward eligibility for the "All Wheels Welcome" outdoor recreation project, which the city previously received design-phase funding for.
YOUTH LEAGUES -- Organizer Mike Marshall asked the Board of Parks for a permit to run a flag football tournament for grades five through eight on Sunday, Oct. 25, using the Machado practice field at Cauley Stadium. Marshall told the board the program is organized by sections of the city, with each neighborhood fielding a team: tryouts already drew about 35 kids to Scullin Park near Maury for the Highlands team and about 30 kids to the Gage field. Marshall said the goal is to get roughly 15 kids per age division into the Oct. 25 tournament. The board discussed waiving the standard $200 custodial fee given the program's ties to a Lowell police-supported youth effort, but the field assignment and fee ultimately hinge on whether the Pop Warner program needs the same turf that day; board members said they would check with Pop Warner ahead of the date.
