Lowell City Council approves February special election for vacant district seat. The Council voted to move the District 1 City Council election from Dec. 15 to Feb. 2, 2027, to allow candidates more preparation time. Mayor Erik Gitschier cited concerns the original date was insufficient for campaign building.
The Council also approved a $1,000 gift from the Demoulas Foundation, a TRC Environmental Corp contract, and a $183,000 ride-share transfer, all 9-0. A motion by Councilor Vesna Nuon to advocate for legislation preventing voter inactivity from missed census forms failed 4-5, with concerns raised about fraud prevention and postal service use. The Council referred multiple items to the City Manager, including exploration of a Centralville skatepark and land co-op housing model.
