Historic Board approves athletic center, conditions permit on smokestack documentation.

Historic Board · Meeting of April 13, 2026

LOWELL — Historic Board approves athletic center project with conditions on smokestack documentation. The board voted 5-1 to grant a Historic Permit to the Lowell Community Charter Public School for demolition of the former Appleton Manufacturing turbine house and construction of a new athletic and community center at 225 and 259 Middlesex Street, conditioned on the applicant providing measured documents of the buildings being demolished. The project includes reduction of an onsite smokestack to 30 feet, preserved for structural stability and contextual design.

Aurora Erickson cast the sole dissenting vote.
