Lowell School Committee approves interim FY27 budget cuts ahead of final vote

Lowell School Committee unanimously approves interim FY27 budget reductions totaling $400,000. Mayor Gitschier moved to decrease funding in three line items: $52,000 from two part-time technician positions, $100,000 from outstanding prior-year expenses, and $248,000 from budget reconciliation. Superintendent Liam Skinner stated the district anticipated both cutting and restoring three Student Support Specialist positions at an estimated cost of $400,000; four residents and staff members spoke during public comment opposing proposed cuts to mental health and student support services.
The Committee also accepted a $1,000 donation from the Barr Foundation to Lowell High School and approved three home education applications. Final FY27 budget approval is scheduled for May 11, 2026.
