The Lowell Police Academy graduated 30 new officers Friday at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, the Town of Lowell announced, marking the academy's 30th year of operation.
The 21-week academy has been training recruits since 1996 in subjects including constitutional law, criminal law, criminal investigations, first aid and CPR, firearms and defensive tactics, and emergency vehicle operations. It is certified by the Municipal Police Training Committee and overseen by Lowell Police instructors and senior officers.
The new officers will leave the academy to join the Brookline, Acton, Billerica, North Reading, Peabody, Malden, Revere and Somerville police departments. Recruits from Lowell, Chelmsford, North Reading and Malden were among those who graduated.
During the ceremony, recruits saluted and received certification documents before being preliminarily sworn in, with family members pinning badges onto their uniforms for the first time. The Lowell High School Choir sang the National Anthem before the graduation.
"I congratulate all of these new officers on their hard-earned graduation. The Lowell Police Academy is rigorous and our expectations are high, but I still told these officers at graduation that this will be the easiest part of their careers. Now the real work begins," Lowell Police Superintendent Greg Hudon said in the release. "I want to thank these new officers for their dedication, and I want to thank their families for being so supportive."
