The city voted to adopt the system, which will deploy cameras on 55 school buses to detect vehicles passing with red lights flashing. The annual cost is $170,000; the city projects approximately $700,000 in fine revenue, which Council member Descoteaux recommended placing in a stabilization fund.
Council members Robinson and Mercier supported the measure for child protection. A separate vote to establish the stabilization fund was defeated. The council also approved $250,000 in Hall Street Bridge funding, a $56,250 fire department hazard mitigation grant, and adopted a Vision Zero traffic safety policy.
