School bus violation detection monitoring approved by council

LOWELL — School bus violation detection monitoring wins council approval for student and pedestrian safety. The city voted to adopt the system, which will deploy cameras on 55 school buses to detect vehicles passing with red lights flashing. The annual cost is $170,000; the city projects approximately $700,000 in fine revenue, which Council member Descoteaux recommended placing in a stabilization fund.
Council members Robinson and Mercier supported the measure for child protection. A separate vote to establish the stabilization fund was defeated. The council also approved $250,000 in Hall Street Bridge funding, a $56,250 fire department hazard mitigation grant, and adopted a Vision Zero traffic safety policy.
