School Committee opts out of inter-district school choice program.
School Committee · Meeting of May 20, 2026
Lowell School Committee opts out of inter-district choice program. The board voted unanimously to decline participation in Inter-District School Choice for the 2026-2027 school year following a public hearing with no speakers. The Committee also unanimously approved a motion requesting Superintendent Liam Skinner provide an update on financial education initiatives in middle schools and consider making financial literacy a mandatory curriculum component.
An amended motion to review staff dress code policy—specifically requesting prohibitions on teachers wearing t-shirts and shorts—failed 3-4 after public comment opposed the district-wide approach. The Career Academy reported graduating 101 students in 2024-2025, a nearly 500 percent increase from 3 graduates in 2015-2016, demonstrating the success of the school's innovation design.
