Lowell Veterans Commission nominates architect John Sullivan for veterans recognition

LOWELL — April 9, 2025 — Lowell Veterans Commission nominates architect and Vietnam veteran John F. Sullivan for the city's veterans recognition program. The commission voted four to one at its April 9 meeting to forward Sullivan's nomination to Veteran Services Officer Eric Lamar, who will arrange a ceremony in city hall. Commission member Gaffney, who served in the same infantry battalion as Sullivan, described Sullivan's reconnaissance platoon service and his 40-year career operating Gavin and Sullivan Architects on Warren Street, where his projects have included Enterprise Bank, the John Darch Building, and a September 11 memorial in Tewksbury. The panel also reviewed plans for a May 31 Memorial Day event at JFK Plaza running noon to 4 p.m., with confirmed vendors, a Humvee, and a reading of 130 Massachusetts killed-in-action names still under debate. Chair Kohls announced her resignation effective June 1, leaving both the chair and clerk positions vacant ahead of the May 14 next meeting.
