School Committee · Meeting of September 16, 2026

Lowell School Committee adopted a PROTECT Act policy limiting civil immigration enforcement on school grounds. Assistant Superintendent Alice Brown-LeGrand presented the policy, required under a law Governor Maura Healey signed August 5, and the board approved it 5-0. Members also debated a $3.45 million, five-year classroom technology lease; Finance Subcommittee chairperson Fred Bahou said the written report undercounted costs, telling colleagues "it was the overall cost of $4.05 million." Parent and teacher Heather Green urged continued device funding, saying her daughter had been barred from bringing a school laptop home for a year and a half.

The board also approved a $12,000 budget modification, a club-advisor agreement with the United Teachers of Lowell, and bundled travel requests for an AFJROTC team, 2026 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year Tara Goodhue, and a Lowell High School delegation, all 5-0. Dominik Lay and Connie Martin were absent.
