LOWELL — The Lowell School Committee's Safety Subcommittee reviewed a districtwide security overhaul and debated a proposed weapons-detection pilot at Lowell High School. Safety office administrator Crocker-Roberge and Safety Coordinator Lisa Brock-Kovicky detailed completed upgrades, including camera additions at three schools, two-way radio upgrades in nine schools, and standardized ALICE drill training, in response to a motion from member Conway seeking an outside security audit. The subcommittee voted unanimously, three ayes, to forward the report to the full School Committee.
Chair Martin pushed back on a proposal to pilot airport-style weapons scanners at the high school, modeled on systems at Lawrence and Brockton high schools, saying, "I do see the weapons detection as a broad leap." Administrators said a citywide two-way radio integration with police would cost the district about $3,500 annually. A second motion, from absent member Del Rossi on dismissal-time lockdown communications, drew no vote; officials said a debriefing already occurred.
